My Story

Chynna Chadderton is a proud Malgana woman from Gathaagudu (Shark Bay, Western Australia) and a self‑taught Aboriginal artist whose practice is grounded in cultural identity, emotional expression, and contemporary storytelling.

From an early age, Chynna developed a strong connection to art through drawing and painting, a passion that continued to evolve throughout her schooling and into adulthood. Painting has become both a creative discipline and an important form of personal healing, offering space for reflection, emotional release, and connection. Her work is shaped by the full spectrum of human experience, and each piece reflects the emotions present at the time of creation.

Chynna’s artistic style draws inspiration from traditional painting practices of her people, incorporating dots, lines, and symbolic forms while blending them with her own contemporary approach. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she uses layered colours and language symbols to represent Country, cultural meaning, and the stories she chooses to share. Her intention is to create artworks that evoke emotion, spark curiosity, and offer viewers a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal culture.

As an Aboriginal woman, Chynna believes strongly in the importance of cultural expression through art, dance, song, and advocacy. She views art as a powerful way to keep culture alive, foster understanding, and honour the significance of Country. While she does not position herself as a cultural knowledge holder, she shares her work as an expression of her personal journey, identity, and connection to her heritage.

Chynna hopes her art encourages others to reflect, feel, and engage with the richness of Aboriginal culture and the beauty of the land on which we all live, work, and create
